Good morning,
Two major fights over Missouri’s November ballot are now headed to the state Supreme Court.
Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green sided with Secretary of State Denny Hoskins in both cases Wednesday, rejecting a referendum on Missouri’s new congressional map and a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at limiting lawmakers’ ability to undo voter-approved measures.
In the redistricting case, Green ruled Missouri’s referendum provisions do not apply to congressional maps and ordered the gerrymandered map passed by lawmakers to remain in effect for the November election. In the second case, he upheld Hoskins’ rejection of the initiative, finding it violated the state constitution’s single-subject requirement and other provisions.
The rulings are a significant win for Hoskins, but not the final word. The Missouri Supreme Court will now decide whether either measure reaches voters this fall.
