Missouri’s congressional candidates ran their August primaries under districts Republicans redrew last year at President Donald Trump’s urging. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Thursday that they won’t run in those districts in November.
The state Constitution gives Missourians the right to vote on the 2025 congressional map, the court ruled, rejecting Secretary of State Denny Hoskins’ effort to keep the referendum off the ballot. And if the referendum is on the ballot, the constitution also says the gerrymandered map is frozen and districts revert back to the previous map.
The decision caps months of litigation, political maneuvering and delays over a map designed to give Republicans a better shot at winning another U.S. House seat. And it sets up an extraordinary fall election in which voters won’t just be choosing members of Congress. They’ll also decide which map survives.
