Good morning,

We tend to talk about the “religious vote” as if it were a single bloc, especially when abortion is on the ballot.

But that shorthand misses a fundamental disagreement among religious leaders: whether their faith calls them to restrict abortion through law or defend the right to make that decision without government interference.

Missouri’s Amendment 3 has brought that debate into sharp focus. Faith leaders on both sides are invoking their moral obligations, yet reaching fundamentally different conclusions about what those obligations demand of government and where its authority should end.

I am a licensed clinical social worker, and the people I see most often in this situation are not short on money, insurance or information. They are short on one thing: a way to get help that nobody at work will ever hear about.
