Good morning,

For years, Missouri Republicans could win legislative races simply by being Republicans. In parts of suburban Kansas City, that may no longer enough.

Jon Patterson is the speaker of the Missouri House and one of the most powerful Republicans in the state. Yet in his campaign for Senate, he is spending considerable energy reminding voters where he has broken with his party.

Democrat Keri Ingle doesn’t need eastern Jackson County to become deep blue. She just needs enough voters to decide that Republican control has gone far enough.

Republicans still have the advantage. But the money and attention flowing into eastern Jackson County suggest both parties see a real contest .
